METABOLIZE

100% cotton
handwoven, dyed & bedazzled

2024
14¼” x 64” in
Until the early 2000s, it was thought that eating food, digesting, and creating energy/discarding waste was a process of food becoming a part of the metabolizer’s body. In recent studies with mice, scientists have found that rice consumed by mice exist in trace amounts outside of its digestive system for long periods of time. These studies have altered the way that we understand the metabolization of food, to be more of an exchange process, rather than an absorption process.

METABOLIZE is the beginning of a series of works exploring physical and cultural consumption and metabolism.

For Health

100% cotton
handwoven, dyed, and bedazzled

2023
51½“ x 14½“
Text derived from a sheet of daily recitations, probably given to my grandmother by a care worker. The simple and child-like affirmations feel diminuitive for a person who has been alive for 91 years.

For Health hangs vertically, like a kakejiku. Hand-dyed with care, and bedazzled.
